One of the most creative personality that Australia has seen born

Florence Broadhurst

Born in 1899 in a remote region of Australian Queensland, Florence Broadhurst is a charismatic and intrepid polymorphic artist. She began a career as a singer and dancer and performed during the Roaring Twenties in Southeast Asia and China where she opened a school of music, song and dance in Shanghai in 1926. She never stopped reinventing herself, settling in London as a seamstress where she borrowed a French name, then a British identity when she returned to Australia during the Second World War.

As a prolific artist, she took up painting, taught engraving and sculpture and opened a gallery before founding her own luxury hand-printed wallpaper publishing studio in the late 1950s. Her production with a refined design, composed of geometric and colored patterns will meet with great success and in the mid-1970s, it monopolized the Australian market and exported all over the world. Her archives list no less than 800 motifs which avant-gardism is still hailed today in the re-editions of the creations of the one who is an enigma, a legend and a heritage.
