The world’s most renowned English wallpapers

The house of Cole & Son is today one of the most respected names in British wallpaper. From the outset, the company chose hand-engraved woodblock printing, a demanding technique that it has continued to master for more than one hundred and fifty years, making it one of the last workshops in the world to perpetuate this craft.

Over the decades, Cole & Son has built up an exceptional heritage: its archive now holds around 1,800 hand-printed blocks and 350 screen-printed designs, covering styles from the 18th to the 20th century. This library of patterns, one of the richest in the sector, enables the house to continually reinterpret historic designs while creating resolutely contemporary collections. The brand’s reputation also owes much to its prestigious commissions: its wallpapers have adorned the walls of Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament, an association that earned the house a Royal Warrant, distinguishing it as an official supplier to the British royal family.

Cole & Son’s added value lies in this rare balance between tradition and creation: the house combines its historic techniques (woodblock printing, screen printing, mica processes that give a silky, luminous finish) with collaborations with contemporary designers, such as Fornasetti with his surrealist worlds, or the South African studio Ardmore. Each roll is thus the result of work by skilled artisans, designed to transform a wall into a true feature rather than a simple decorative background.

On a global scale, Cole & Son is now the leading source of authentic period wallpapers and is the official supplier to Buckingham Palace and the White House. The brand’s archives serve as inspiration for the contemporary productions of the Cole & Son collections. The company has collaborated with major design names such as Tom Dixon, David Hicks, Piero Fornasetti and Vivienne Westwood. You may encounter some of the brand’s designs in iconic locations that have given it its prestige. Notable examples include the bare tree motif of the Woods wallpaper and the geometric effect of Hicks Hexagon, whose success has crossed borders to appear on walls around the world.

Woods, the house’s most iconic collection

Among all its creations, Woods best embodies the spirit of Cole & Son. Designed by Michael Clark in 1959 as a screen print, this collection depicts a forest of stripped birch trees, in a graphic, dreamlike line that evokes the forests of childhood fairy tales. Now an essential classic, it is available today in a wide palette of colours, from the most understated black and white to golden or copper tones, and extends into the Woods and Stars and Woods and Pears variants. Its success has never wavered: it is now the house’s most recognisable pattern, favoured by both private clients and interior architects.

How to choose your Cole & Son wallpaper

The house’s more graphic patterns, such as Woods, work particularly well as a full-wall covering in a living room, hallway or bedroom, where they create a strong focal point without requiring an accumulation of decorative elements. More classic designs from the historic archive — damasks, floral motifs, Toile de Jouy scenes — naturally find their place in more traditional interiors, especially when paired with antique furniture or wood panelling. As with any high-end wallpaper, it is recommended to order a sample before purchase in order to judge the appearance of colours and materials in situ, as natural light can significantly alter the perception of a shade.

Cole & Son has embarked on a progressive social and environmental responsibility strategy focused on improving its products, packaging and production methods. The brand has developed an “eco-base” substrate containing 79% renewable fibres, used notably for the Fungi Forest collection designed with Stella McCartney, which received an international award in 2023. This collaboration was presented by the management as a lever to accelerate the brand’s transition towards more sustainable practices.

Cole & Son works with its suppliers to ensure they share its vision of responsible production and is exploring more noble and durable materials such as pure silk or woven natural fibres. In terms of packaging, the brand is re-evaluating its solutions to eliminate plastic and favour fully recyclable options, retaining only what is strictly necessary to protect the product during transport. Internally, sorting and material reuse systems have been implemented in the offices and warehouse to limit waste.

The approach remains, for now, little formalised. The commitment is mainly reflected in concrete improvements to the product and packaging, presented as the first steps towards more responsible luxury.
