The brand Cole & Son was founded in 1875 by John Perry in the north of London, an area known in the 19th century for its expertise in hand printing. The first motifs designed by Cole and Son were sometimes inspired by French silks to create their wallpaper designs, decorative panels and friezes. The benchmark of English wallpaper design, Cole & Son also publish motifs by the famous artist Piero Fornasetti.

Wallpaper specialist since 1875, Cole and Son is one of the world's most famous wallpaper brands. Initially inspired by Lyon silks and French textiles, Cole & Son has since evolved and is now working with top designers and artists around the world, such as David Hicks or Tom Dixon.

Cole and Son wallpapers are hand printed. These wall coverings can today be found in prestigious locations. The different Cole and Son wallpapers have furnished castles, palaces and theatres throughout Europe since the twentieth century. Its recent collections revisit its most popular: exceptional English wallpapers with floral, plant or even geometric motifs, as well as stripes or damask patterns. Cole & Son has embarked on a progressive social and environmental responsibility strategy focused on improving its products, packaging and production methods. The brand has developed an “eco-base” substrate containing 79% renewable fibres, used notably for the Fungi Forest collection designed with Stella McCartney, which received an international award in 2023. This collaboration was presented by the management as a lever to accelerate the brand’s transition towards more sustainable practices.

Cole & Son works with its suppliers to ensure they share its vision of responsible production and is exploring more noble and durable materials such as pure silk or woven natural fibres. In terms of packaging, the brand is re-evaluating its solutions to eliminate plastic and favour fully recyclable options, retaining only what is strictly necessary to protect the product during transport. Internally, sorting and material reuse systems have been implemented in the offices and warehouse to limit waste.

The approach remains, for now, little formalised. The commitment is mainly reflected in concrete improvements to the product and packaging, presented as the first steps towards more responsible luxury.
