Maharam, rocked by the patterns of the past

Founded over a century ago, the American brand Maharam has an incredible heritage. Its collections regularly look back to the past and showcase interesting productions. The Textiles of the 20th century collection in particular, brings together fabrics paying homage to modernism with graphic and colorful patterns.

Maharam textiles are included in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Stedelijk Museum, among others.

Concerned about its ecological footprint, the company is committed to respecting the environment and considers its creations to be sustainable. It does this by having a Cradle-to-cradle production and labeled products, among others Eu Ecolabel, Greenguard gold and Oeko-tex.

Maharam, a US-based upholstery textile publisher now part of the MillerKnoll group, places social and environmental responsibility at the heart of its strategy, with climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and transparent reporting on its carbon footprint. The brand is progressively eliminating controversial substances from its collections, including flame retardants, antimicrobials and PFAS-based stain treatments, thereby reducing the chemical impact of its fabrics on health and the environment. A growing share of its ranges is designed with recycled or bio-based fibres, and several references are GREENGUARD Gold certified and LEED-compliant, guaranteeing low indoor air emissions and renewable or recycled content. Maharam regularly publishes environmental product declarations (EPDs) and life-cycle assessments, enabling architects and specifiers to evaluate the impact of each fabric from cradle to gate. On the social front, the company builds on MillerKnoll’s CSR commitments, which include respect for human rights in the supply chain, internal equity and diversity, and training and safety programmes for employees. Maharam also favours long-term partnerships with suppliers and weaving workshops in Europe and the United States, promoting working conditions that comply with local regulations and more traceable production.
