Calculation of the length required for your curtains

Knowing the exact quantity of fabric required to make your curtains is essential, and it is easy to calculate by following the steps below. But first a tip if you move house regularly: go for large curtains with large waves, and with a long hem, so that they can be reused after a few adjustments.

1. Measure the height

  • Determine the length to which you would like to see the fabric fall: to the ground, half-height, to the edge of the window.
  • Take into account the type of rails and fastenings you plan to use. The measurement will in fact be different depending on the rail and the curtain heading used. In this regard, you should read the section on how to choose a fabric for your curtains.
  • Consider adding 30 cm to your measurement, that is, at least 10 cm for the hem at the top and 20 cm for the hem at the base.
  • Add the length of the join pattern to the height. The join pattern must be at the same height on each drop to retain the continuity of the patterns, which may require the use of more fabric. This information is generally noted in our product specifications. By adding the length of the join pattern you can achieve perfect symmetry regarding the designs of the two curtain drops.

2. Measure the width

Single drop curtain

  • For standard fabrics, the required width should be between 1.5 and 2 times the width of the window.
  • For casement curtains allow 2.5 times the width of the window. In any case your should also allow an additional 10 cm for the hems.
  • If you want to put a curtain on each side of your window, the best solution is to position the entire width at the centre of the window.

Two-drop curtains

3. Calculate the number of drops

  • Divide the desired width of the curtain by the width of the fabric you have chosen.
  • Round up the total to the nearest whole number.

4. Calculate the length to be ordered

  • Multiply the length of the curtains by the number of drops
